Saxophonist Magnus Thuelund refuses to sound like everyone else, though it’s clear he has listened closely to the likes of Lee Konitz and Walter Smith. He’s undoubtedly also been inspired by jazz legend John Coltrane, who is said to have once remarked that his soul was pure music. That sentiment seems to resonate deeply with Denmark’s Magnus Thuelund. When you listen to his music, you can sense that, for him, music gives life its meaning—no matter which of his vibrant albums you explore.
Thuelund’s sound draws you into a world painted with a wonderful blend of modern jazz, world music, indie rock, and even touches of classical music. At Godset, you’ll experience Thuelund with his expanded quartet, Airborne, featuring an unbeatable rhythm section and a rich brass lineup of the finest musicians. The band is on the verge of releasing a brand-new sixth album, and this concert will feature selections from it, as well as pieces from Thuelund’s critically acclaimed album Angel from the South.
The six musicians’ interplay creates a truly unique sound. They are heroes of the air, playing with a lightness, freedom, and melodic strength that is both edgy and deeply moving. Their music will likely take root in you, leaving you the next morning with tunes in your head and a lightness in your heart. As Coltrane said, music is life - and we couldn’t agree more.
